Prawn Paste Molasses (Petis Udang / Hae Ko) is a thick, sweet Southeast Asian prawn paste used as a savory-sweet condiment or cooking ingredient in dishes from Malaysia, Indonesia and parts of China. It is known for its sticky molasses-like texture and concentrated umami flavour, often added in small amounts to sauces, marinades and stews. Nutritionally it is an energy-dense, sweetened condiment with very high sodium — containing about 6.5g of salt per 100g — and substantial added sugar, while also contributing some protein and marine-derived nutrients such as omega‑3s, selenium and vitamin B12. Because it is used in small quantities, it mainly functions as a flavouring rather than a bulk food. From a health perspective, its strong points are the seafood-derived nutrients and protein quality, but the high salt and sugar content make it a condiment to use sparingly or to swap for lower-sodium/less-sweet alternatives when possible.
