Taro Stem is the edible stalk (petiole) of the taro plant, used across Pacific, South and Southeast Asian cuisines and in Hawaiian cooking (kalo). It’s commonly added to soups, stews, curries and stir-fries for its tender, slightly nutty texture once cooked. Like many aroid stems, it is usually cooked thoroughly to reduce naturally occurring irritants. Nutritionally, Taro Stem is a low-calorie, high-water vegetable that provides 2g of fiber per 100g and is a good source of potassium and vitamin C, while remaining very low in fat. Its mild flavor and firm texture make it a useful, lower-calorie substitute for heartier vegetables in mixed dishes. Overall, Taro Stem offers useful fiber and micronutrients for a vegetable and can contribute to satiety and electrolyte balance; it is not a major source of antioxidant pigments, so pair it with colorful vegetables if you want extra carotenoids or polyphenols.
