Sugar Substitute (Aspartame) is an artificial, non-nutritive sweetener widely used to provide sugar-like sweetness in beverages, tabletop sweeteners and many reduced-calorie packaged foods. It is popular in low-calorie and diet formulations because it is many times sweeter than sugar and used in very small amounts. Nutritionally, Sugar Substitute (Aspartame) contributes essentially no energy at 0kcal per 100g and supplies negligible amounts of carbohydrates, protein, fat or fiber, so it doesn't provide vitamins or minerals. It is used primarily to replace sugar's sweetness without adding calories. While Sugar Substitute (Aspartame) can help reduce calorie intake from sugar, it contains phenylalanine and must be avoided by people with phenylketonuria (PKU); some people also prefer natural alternatives such as stevia or monk fruit for taste or personal preference.
