Mixed Spice is a warm, aromatic spice blend used mainly in British and European baking and desserts (and sometimes savoury dishes); traditional versions combine cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice and sometimes ginger or coriander. It is typically used in small amounts to add depth to cakes, pies (hence the name Apple Pie Spice) and puddings. Although spices are consumed in tiny quantities, Mixed Spice is relatively high in indigestible plant matter and provides about 40g of fiber per 100g of product — most of which is irrelevant in a typical pinch but reflects its composition of whole ground spices. It also contributes trace minerals such as manganese and iron when used regularly. Because it’s made from whole spices, Mixed Spice contains antioxidant compounds (polyphenols) that contribute flavor and may offer modest protective effects, but keep in mind that typical serving sizes are very small so the direct nutritional impact per portion is minimal.
